Step by step guide to rooting your Samsung Galaxy S4 for free

Today, we’re going to explain exactly how to root your Galaxy S4. To do this, you need to connect your Galaxy S4 to your computer using your micro-USB cord before transferring files and scripts onto the device.
As mentioned above, this method can take quite a bit of time (2 hours or more) and, if you mess up at any step along the way, there’s a serious risk of bricking your phone and making your $600+ Android unusable.

Required materials:

  • A MicroSD card at least 1GB in size
  • Samsung Galaxy S4
  • A computer with an internet connection
  • Micro USB cord
  • 1 to 2 hours of time

Step 1 – Preparation

-Download and install the official Samsung USB Drivers onto your PC from the Samsung Developer’s website here
-Download and install the Android Terminal Emulator app onto your Samsung Galaxy S4
-Download and extract the Root Exploit kit from the XDA Developers Forum onto your PC

Step 2 – Preparing your MicroSD

-You need to make sure your MicroSD card is formatted as an exFat drive as opposed to FAT32. If not, you’re going to encounter some serious problems.
-You can check your MicroSD card formatting in two ways: insert it into your PC using a MicroSD card reader; or, if your microSD is at least 64GB in size, then your Galaxy S4 will be able to format it to the correct type
-After inserting your MicroSD card into your computer, you can format it by going to My Computer, finding the card, and then right-clicking and choosing Format.
-If your MicroSD card is formatted incorrectly, then you will encounter Permission Denied errors when attempting to root your device
-Once your MicroSD is formatted correctly, you’re ready to move onto the next step

Step 3 – Rooting your Galaxy S4

-Insert your MicroSD card into your PC and drag and drop all of the files from the Root Exploit kit directly onto the MicroSD card (you can also do this directly from Android if you want)
-Insert your MicroSD card into your Galaxy S4
-On your Galaxy S4, open the Android Terminal Emulator
-From the Emulator, run the following three commands one after another exactly as they appear (including capital letters):
  • cd /mnt/extSdCard
  • ./pwn
  • ./script.sh
-The first command mounts your SD card, the second command gives root access to your device, and the third command makes that root access permanent.
-Once you’ve entered all three commands, close the Terminal Emulator app and go to the Google Play Store to download the latest version of SuperSU.
-Open the Super SU app and let the app update itself to the latest version, which it will do automatically
-Download and install the Root Checker app from the Google Play Store
-Run Root Checker to check if your Galaxy S4 has been successfully rooted
-Reboot your device by pressing the side power button once
-After your device reboots, run the Root Checker app once again to make sure you have root access
You have successfully rooted your Galaxy S4 and now have full access to your device.
